I’m going to look at a hotblast today, it’s a 1537m listed used for $750. I can’t find a new one being sold in my area currently. A local hardware has hitzer 55 fa for just under $2200. I’m torn, I love the idea of an external shaker handle and hopefully less shaker problems than the hotblast. In past years I’ve been using a harman tlc but due to the shape of my house only half is heated with it. So I’m going to bite the bullet and install a 2nd flue double wall stainless that I got with my tlc and run ductwork. Any feedback would be great. Thanks in advance for any thoughts that might sway me!

I’m going to look at a used hot blast 1537 M for $750. Also in my area there’s a hardware selling hitzer 55FA for just under $2200 with filter box. I love the idea of an external shaker handle and hopefully less shaker problems than the hotblast. Anybody with thoughts on this please help. Thanks in advance!

I dont know if the Hitzer 55FA will be big enough but I wouldnt get the Hotblast. Search for Hotblast on this site (upper right hand corner) and you will see why. The 55 sounds a little overpriced but perhaps Im wrong.

Some here have built duct work around stoves that didnt come that way. Maybe you can do that with your Harman??

The Hitzer is a much better unit for burning coal. I assume you have duct work to tie it into? How big is your house?

I have duct work but it’s in the attic. It’s for my heat pump. I am going to run some new in the basement. I’m thinking 2 6” feeds to bedrooms above the stove area and a larger feed to the finished side of my basement. Not sure whether I will leave it to gravity feed above that or duct into a floor vent.

Sorry rob the house is a raised ranch approx 30x60. It’s insulated mid 80’s constructed. From what I’m reading I think the hitzer will be enough. I passed on the hotblast as it was not complete. Also just about every firebrick needed replaced and some other reasons

I heated our home for about 10 years with a Clayton, the same company that makes the Hot Blast, pretty much the same stove. It can be done but I certainly would never recommend anybody to get one. Mainly because of the grate issues.

Are you looking to heat the basement as well?

Rob R. I would like to heat the finished part of the basement some, wouldn’t need it constantly but if the wife wanted to exercise or if we were going to spend time down there.

Whereabouts are you there are some good deals on used Hitzers...
If you are willing to drive some you will find what you want...
Found a used 503 insert for $300...
7 hour drive but worth it...
ended up with 4 cases of wine from the finger lakes to boot...
But not free...
Then with some help on the forum found a better 503 for free...
Practically new...

Capecoaler I’m in south western pa. I have been searching marketplace and Craigslist and the local paper. I’m trying to get one so I can get the bulk of the work done before June. We’re taking a trip out west and will gone for a few weeks. I’m sure there will be lots to catch up on plus work, yard work,firewood...I’ll probably need a 2nd coal bin and time to fill them. I’m not afraid of a drive to get one but I have 3 kids and time isn’t plentiful. I did order a hitzer 55fa today and I hope it will do the trick for me. We’ll see in a few weeks when it gets here. Then again probably won’t know much until the weather gets cold

I am a newbie when it comes to forced hot air. I think with a ductwork and some dampers you can heat that area part time, but one of the other guys will probably have more details.

Indeed----------Coal is not the best--"occasional heat" set-up unless ya go with zones or dampers of some sort.
