Stove burning hot
I just installed a US Army cannon.
The stove is working great but any thing more than about 25 pounds of lump coal and the temp at the upper part of the stove goes to 600 plus. Any suggestions about opporating temps appreciated.
Thank you

Typically more air equals more heat, so check for air leaks. Damper closed?

No, kinda like ash door vents but different!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
I am using large lump - size varies for nut to large fist in size. One thing is the stove came with a pipe reducer from 7 to 6 inches. If I close the ash tray, main door and pipe damper the ash door and main doors will pop open. That problem seems to be solved by cracking the main door damper.

I have a #20 Cannon Stove I just inherited and its in perfect shape except the top cast diverter. Its cracked. Who can recommend a viable replacement. Also do you believe I should line the stove with the refractory material, clay? Only burning wood. Thanks in advance.

Have pics of crack?
I have no idea if this would work but let me throw it out for discussion.
If the crack has nothing to do with structural integrity, I suggest getting a caulking tube of high temperature mortar and laying a nice bead on both sides of the crack. Maybe even get a putty knife and press it into the crack and then lay a nice bead on both sides. That stuff dries hard and is extremely durable. I used it on an exhaust manifold leaking at the donut gasket before.

Thank you, It is the Cast iron Baffle in the top. It cracked in half, Probably cant weld it because its cast iron. I seen a fix using a cast iron pot from Harbor freight on You tube. This piece pretty much just slows the burn leaving the pipe. I will try that calking fix see if it can be all glued back together. Thanks. Wish someone was making reproduction pieces for these stoves. They are truly a great stove.

Cast can be welded, a special rod and preheating with a big torch is a must. A fabricator buddy has helped me patch a leg on my cannon #20

Many of us know these as lower dampers as well...and they are, but many of us also refer to these as simply "air intakes" (sometimes there are uppers and lowers on a stove)...and many of us refer to a pipe damper as simple a "damper" (sometimes called a manual pipe damper or mpd), a key damper, and a few other things.
Not trying to be the internet police. Just trying to avoid some confusion. Just make sure you and those conversing with you know which damper you're referring to and when.
