Hand Fed Coal Stove: Hitzer 983

Hey guys. Just bought a used 2017 Hitzer 983. I’ve been burning wood for the last 15 years in a regency i2400 and want to step up my game. My current stove I did the install new, and relocated, when I moved to my new house. installed a 6” stainless Steel wrapped liner, chimney is clay lined and was great shape last time I checked and is about 25 foot tall, with no draft problems. I remember when installing the 6” liner thinking a 8” liner wouldn’t fit. The hitzer 983 has a 8” flue. How would you guys recommend I install the new hitzer. Would it be ok to you use a 8 to 6 reducer? Or just take the liner out try to run new 8” liner? Or take the liner out seal the dampener? Any help or recommendations appreciated! I’m in Maryland near the PA line where coal is plentiful but not popular in Maryland for some crazy reason. So having problems getting good advice from the “experts”

Welcome to the forum W. I have the 983, awesome stove you will love it. My advice would be see and try and fit a 8 inch liner that’s what I have. As you know that’s recommended. The 983 is a big stove with a huge fire box and three grates it needs all the draft it can get. I guess since you have the six inch liner you could try it but I feel you may be disappointed with the performance. Keep us posted on your results. If your chimney is lined with clay liners take out your old liner and just take a piece of pipe and extend it from your stove past your smoke shelf pack any loose areas with rock wool and your good to go.

You do have a clay lined chimney re read the post. Forget the liner. Forget wood too once you switch to coal no creosote no cutting wood like a mad dog and way way less mess more consistent heat coal is a 100% improvement over wood!

I saw your post on FaceBook with people advising you to put in a full length liner.. you don't need all that.. the guys around here know what they're doing. Yer in good hands.

Thanks guys. Think that’s what I will do just run a pipe straight up into the liner. Biggest problem is going to be the flue. It is very narrow. I had a hard time getting the 6” SS liner thru it. I’ll get it figured out. Thanks for the advice!

What kind of pipe would you guys recommend putting up there? Just black stove pipe?

If your 6" liner was a tough fit, your original clay lined flue is not oversized for the 983. I would remove the stainless liner and go from there.

Several years ago when I put my Hitzer insert in I ran a full length liner in my tile lined chimney.
I used a 6" SS liner it was a royal pain to get it past my smoke ledge and thru the dampner location.
I had to squash the round liner into an oval and then try and get it back into a round shape for the connection
to the insert.
The smoke shelf didn't have much room for a 4" shape but the actual chimney is 16" square clay tile in cement blocks.
It would have been nice not to run a liner but I don't know if it would have drafted good with that huge chimney or if the flue gases would have cooled to much for good drafting.
I am wondering if it would work without the liner as I would expect that my liner is getting in poor shape.

Must be a little known fact, this problem has been around for many decades. One only need to look because there is a manufactured flexible oval pipe made for the purpose of passing through smoke shelf/ damper. Believe it is 60” long piece.
Here, have a look: https://www.google.com/search?q=DuraLiner+Stainle ... +Flex+Pipe

One stop shopping here: https://www.northlineexpress.com/search-results/? ... ey%20liner

Yes they had those available and I actually thought about it when I did mine,
The main reason I didn't was the $$$$$.
A roll of flex, the two round to oval adapters, the section of oval and the extra install pieces.
If I redo it I may very well use them the next time.

Bingo!! ...so long as you don’t plan on burning wood. Even if you do plan on burning wood though, even with 6” your draft should be el-primo burning either fuel. Perhaps too much draft, so beware of that too.
