Would you be willing to post the profile picture of your TLC2000 a bit larger? Just wanted to get a look at the set-up and arrangement of it.
I still have to speak with a local chimney guy before I make any decision. Apparently my flue/chimney combination is not very conducive to changing into higher heat coal stoves, wood burners etc. My fireplace is great to look at, but is zero sum when it comes to generating heat...

Unfortunately the steel chimney won’t last with a coal stove. From my readings here I believe most get 3-8 years with an average of 5 years with an stainless chimney. You said you’ll have 2 college funds to pay for in a dozen years or so. That would suggest to me that you may go through 3 steel chimneys before your last college education payment.
I’m not big on doing things twice. 3 times. I would definitely say nope. Even if the brick chimney cost twice as much to install today, in the long run you’ll save big.

I have the DS Comfortmax 75. I burn both wood and coal in it. I can tell you the stove burns coal and wood almost equally well. You have more temperature control with coal. When I'm burning wood the stove cranks the heat out. I've figured out you cant load it to the max with wood, just 3 medium sizes pieces at a time are more than enough for mild weather. I generally only burn wood in fall and spring when all you need is an evening fire to keep the house warm

I have an older Hitzer 354 wood/coal stove, before the EPA made them advertise as a coal ONLY stove. However, I have not burned enough wood in it yet to be able to give a report. Sorry! I’ll update next fall when my wood is better seasoned.
