Hand Fed Coal Stove: SAEY 92
Coal Size/Type: Pea

I am new to the SAEY 92, and to a top loading hopper stove in general. I didn't connect this stove up yet, and maybe I am a little paranoid because I don't understand the science of it, but is a hopper fire a concern with this stove? I am going to replace all the gaskets before I install it, as it is used and a small section of the hopper door rope gasket is missing. I just need to be put at ease because of having a stove with a vertical design, I guess. Thanks.

Don't know specifically about your model but with my Hitzer it is very important to have a good seal with the hopper lid to prevent a hopper fire. I would not fill the hopper until you repair the gasket.

Thanks Gian4. I don't plan on connecting the stove up until I replace all gaskets, including the hopper door one and install the new glass. Would that be the only reason a vertical top loading hopper stove would produce a hopper fire?

Make sure you set your draft and baro damper correctly with a draft gauge.

The only way you will have a hopper fire is if there is air being drawn through the hopper.

To my knowledge if the hopper lid seals well meaning no warpage and a good gasket no air should leak by into the hopper. With no air there can be no fire.
