Hand Fed Coal Stove: Hitzer 5093
Coal Size/Type: Nut

Post by Hank0714 » Tue. Jan. 19, 2021 1:21 pm

Good afternoon and thank you for taking the time to read this. I have a Hitzer 5093 and have been burning it since November. I let it go out as it warmed up a little and now I cannot seem to get it fired. I start a wood fire and it burns normal but as I start to introduce nut coal it just seems to slowly die out. Ok have burned coal for a couple of years and haven't run into this. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Get some match light & put a bag in & light--slowly add coal once the briquettes get going good. Open ash door vents 1/4 & open back flap a bit. Weird huh??????????????????????????

I use wood also to start my stove. I have to let the wood burn for a hour +/- to warm up the flue before I add coal. My chimney is masonry on the gable end of a 2 story. It it takes that long to warm up flue before I get a good draft.

I always let the wood burn down to a heavy bed of coals before I start loading. Then I tried the match light trick. Now I just use that unless I plan on burning wood and want to switch to coal.

Okay the matchlight did the trick. Stove up and running. Thank you for all the help. Now the fire is getting pulled up to the hopper. I replaced the gasket with a 1/2 inch rope style gasket and it still is pulling the fire up. Can I put a 5/8 inch gasket on it to fill the gap or maybe put a bead of high temp caulk on the stove top where it makes contact with the hopper door gasket?

Yes on the 5/8 if 1/2 isn't workin--put something heavy non-flammable on hopper door. Make sure there's no lil coal crumbs under door.

See what Fred is suggesting...seal off the top of the hopper so air doesn't follow out of it. Flame follows draft.

When is the last time you cleaned your stove pipes and tested your draft?

Stove pipe was just installed 2 months ago. I'm not sure if the hopper door is warped. I'm going to try the 5/8" gasket and see if that fixes the problem.

If so H, make sure ya put something heavy on the hopper flap/door.
