So about 10 days ago a stray cat shows up out here and promptly took up residence under my shed. Dumped probably. After about a week of it caterwauling I started feeding it. Mostly because of the declining bird population. My angry wren is no where to be seen.
I was pondering what to do about it one morning while sitting in my lawn chair in the basement waiting for the fire in the Clayton to recover. While sitting there I saw a mouse scale down the wall as if it were a horizontal plane.

I went outside and got the cat brought it into the basement much to the cats delight. It made itself right at home and seemed very appreciative. Seems to be going well. Uses litter box, likes cheap cat food, isn’t too annoying, adjusts spinner knob on stove!!!!????

Yep. I was sitting there this morning and the cat moseyed over and as if to say “look what I can do” started spinning the draft knob. Maybe he was getting cold. Yikes. I’ll have to rig up some kind of anti cat lock so that doesn’t happen again.

Brilliant! I’ve been calling him charcoal because he has gotten so dirty from coal dust and he keeps rubbing up against coal bags and pails. I think Clayton sounds better though.

Best beware of any Chinese restaurant that advertises " Our chow mien is the cats a$$ ".

Did the cat want it hotter or colder in the basement?

I think the cat was looking for a way out of the basement so I'd open a door for him ;) I may be partial as Im not a fan of house cats, but that would have been a sign to me to show him outside. A dog would have asked permission somehow.

If I hadn’t seen the mice the cat would still be outside fighting off coyotes.

MeeOWWWWWW! LOL I like coyotes much more, had a pet one for maybe 12 years. I bottle fed it so real gentle. If it hadnt smelled so bad (all coyotes smell) it would have been in the house. Fun to play with, very smart. It never would have touched that knob, lol

I probably should have hung a pair of vice grips on the bottom fin of the knob before I left. Hope the house doesn’t get burned down all in my efforts to get rid of mice.

Don't feel bad. My ex had a dog that I caught more than once pushing the main damper wide open on the wood stove that I was using before going to rocks.
Why he did that, my best guess was that he wanted it warmer.

Keep the cat. He is smart. He may have more tricks to show you.

My in laws seem to always have at least one stray around... They've lived on the back porch, basement, and one even got a bedroom of its own (my wife's doing). The current cat, Jack (only has one eye), is in the basement with the EFM 520. After a year of trying to sift out cat turds I finally made a custom screen door to keep her out of the coal bin. I like her much better now that we have clean coal!
