I picked up this Clayton 7.1 last spring. Installed a few weeks ago and it’s been running good up until 2 days ago. It didn’t have a spin damper on the ash door so I added one. I plugged the holes in the liners in order to burn anthracite. Now after the fire is established and the volutiles burn off I’ll switch to the ash door damper and the stove won’t run above 300. It may even drop lower. I have been firing it back up to get some heat upstairs. I’m confused why it won’t run off the ash door damper? It looks like I wasted a lot of time and effort doing it.

What was it using for primary air previously?

Your ash door spinner might not contribute enough combustion air. Manometer installed? What is your draft?

How much is spinner open?
Experiment but do keep in mind response to notice the changes takes lots of time.

That's all I got...
You're in good hands with 'Lightning...:)

Is that an attempt at adding controlled Secondary Air?

Still curious about draft reading?

Right, but that air coming in thru the spinner just above the ash door is still directed under the grates, or no?

No it was meant to be used as primary air.

Draft is set at .06.

I’m not sure of the air path. I believe so. I thought you ran your primary air through the damper on the ash door after you blocked the holes in the end plates with fiberglass insulation in order to burn anthracite. So as this stove had no draft spinner in the ash door I added one to replicate yours.

Yes, I did run my primary air thru the ash door because that was the only place for it to come thru on the 1557m.. The blocking of the holes, or in my case, the channels behind the firebox plates was so that primary air could not take the path of least resistance around the fuel bed. Instead, it's only way was thru it.

In your case, all is not lost.. you can use both spinners for extra heat, unless you blocked the spinner above the ash door.

Your draft of -.06 is plenty :)
Do you have a baro on flue pipe?

I have two mpd’s before a baro. I just stuffed fiberglass in the holes to see how it worked. I was planning on putting it behind the plate so I added the spinner. So if I do that it looks like it won’t run off of the ash door spinner. This might be a case of if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Tbh when I ran a 40# sample of anthracite right before I started burning bit, it ran fine without Having those holes plugged.

Hope this helps. Looks like the air is over the grates.

Nice. Thanks. I’ve been looking for info on this stove but google is pretty much useless anymore. It’s just turned into e-commerce instead information.
