Fired up for season today 5hr in. Running like always stove temp around 375, pipe temp 190 ash pan vents closed but ash pan door just roasted my fingers it at stove temp and slide won't move ( this has happened before when ash door gets hot) works again easy when cools down, any clue why it's so hot? Also always wondering if burning stove around 375-425 is a pipe temp 190-240 decent or should it be lower not to waste anything.

W, I sure wouldn't want to touch my ash door while ramping up for the season. I don't have any gizmo's to check temps but I do know where not to touch.

Did you put a layer of ash on the grates before starting the stove? I didnt one time and until the stove was full my grates were glowing. The entire stove gets very hot during start up! Off topic: something I figured out this year, I had an issue with my ash door handle sticking. I put a little automotive red grease on the latch surface, now it works better than new!
