Hitzer 50-93 Secondary Combustion Install

I've been wanting to do this for years to burn wood in my coal stove and finally gave it a try after viewing numerous designs. I unbolted the hopper and installed a baffle plate. Ran some 1/2" pipe along the lower front and upper rear each having their own controll valve. I drilled 1/8" holes about an inch apart. The front holes are directed so the blue flames flow towards the upper rear which seems to help with ignition. Working pretty good with coal. Haven't tried it with wood yet.

Hopefully its just me but the video wouldnt play. I use a Linux OS so that could be why.

I added 2 pipes to my last stove (not a Hitzer) and had real good results. I first had holes drilled the first year and the second year I just ran it straight out each pipe aimed at my back wall. It was somewhat common for my back wall to turn red from all the gasses being burned no matter what fuel I used. I used 3/4" pipes and was going to change them to 1" but never did.

If you havent found the post, our member Lightning has a long post on secondary air with a lot of info in it. There is another long post too but I cant remember who started it.

I wanted to use 3/4" but started with 1/2" because it fit the inside corners w/o any mods on firebrick etc. Hopefully it will be enough air for wood. I noticed with coal, they ignite around 450-500 degrees ( magnetic temp gauges on outside) which is pretty good to what I need to be for this old house. I miss having a large window on my stove. I forgot to ask, what type of valve are you using for letting air in?

They are 1/2" ball valves . They have a nylon seal so I kept them down low away from heat..

Another advantage to start down low is to create a "chimney effect" with the incoming air supply.

Next time you shut down do a video of the install so we can se exactly what and how you did it please

I will send you some pics in the near future. It is not as good as it could be...larger pipe, stainless material, and insulative blanket material above manifold tubes.. It's very hard to get it to do this with wood .... with the current set up...super dry wood , high temp, ...

Yeah I got ya , just collecting ideas for my build , stainless would be nice , thought about making a baffle plate for mine too , or move the mpd into the lowest past of the flue to hold that high temp in the stove to in- courage re burn

I thought TLC had air tubes for wood already?
