Has anyone ever warped a grate? I'm not sure how that happened but my front grate is sagging like a old women. :o Not a pretty site for sure. Looks like a replacement is in order.

You might want to keep a layer of ash between your fire and the grates. I usually only shake till i see one or two hot embers in my ash pan. I always try to keep an inch or two between my fire and the grates, even when I let it go out for the year, I keep some ash on the grates. I never had problems with warped grates.

Leaving the ash door open too long will cause this also.
You got her too hot at some point some how.

It is bowed in the middle. It's got a fire in it now or I would get a picture.

R
Is it the grate or the grate holder that's warped? The frame is steel and is more likely to warp. Just saying.

it's the grate and shaking down is resulting in a pile of coal in the ashpan. I wonder is I can flatten is grate out and reuse it

Nope, you'll break it--it's cast. Did ya buy it local?? They should have a grate--make sure ya specify front or rear. If ya didn't buy it new--try HITZER for replacement. 260-589-8536

No you can't, and if you should ever break a grate, you will need to replace it, as they cannot be successfully welded.

Make sure you season any new cast iron grates. Do this by starting 3 or 4 fires, each fire getting a little bigger than the last, and letting them go out.

Some of us use a portable kitchen timer to remind us that the dampers/doors are still open. I like the inexpensive, little clip-on-your-pocket ones from Walmart.

Where did you order parts from? I hope that is counting shipping? If does counting shipping then it’s probably right.
