I bought a 50-93 last year and use it to heat a large living room plus what ever radiates into the rest of the house. I installed last January and used it the rest of the year without any issues, now I can’t control the temperature. Last spring I lit it to take the chill off and while I was getting it going I fell asleep for a short time and it got a little hot. I changed the gaskets and put new glass in the door and still seems to be getting air. Has anybody had an issue like this?

Is there a real hot spot in the lft. corner where shaker handle comes out? Really check hopper flap to make sure not even a small kernel didn't get under there. Be careful with that falling asleep.

Is there a chance the stove got so hot it damaged the bi-metallic thermostat spring and therefore not allowing the thermostat to function properly?

I’m kind of glad the OP brought this up.
Thanks for the reply, Larry. Probably be a good idea to buy an extra spring from Dean when I go back for my 2nd ton of coal just so I have a spare for my stove.
CJ, you might call check into this as well. Any idea how hot your stove got?

Well i didn’t want to fall asleep, it was one of those long day at work outside in the cold and come home to a 59 degree house. I started a wood fire in it then put in the coal and and sat there waiting for that to get going and it warmed up just enough to put me to sleep. The temp got up to around 500-550 when I woke up. I used to be able to idle it right down so I could keep it pretty comfortable when the weather was like it is right now but it just seems to want to run right up to 400-450. The flap on the back works just fine as it closes flat and is open when the stove does cool down. The bed of coal looks to be pretty evenly red across the stove. Is there supposed to be a rope seal or something where the handle is for the shaker? I’m pretty thorough when I put coal in to wipe the top into the hopper just keep the any coal dust and small pieces off it. I do notice a little rustyness where the hopper door seals, maybe I’ll smoothen that up and paint it after it goes out to eliminate that.

For the shaker handle outlet--find a washer to slip over the nub (I forget what size, but big) and I JB Welded it to stove body & it eliminated a lot of the draw there.--no rope or gasket. Might be that lil bit of rust--it don't take much.

I’ll try that and see what happens. I really appreciate the responses. Hopefully I can get it figured out, this stove has done exactly what I had planned on it doing with the exception of this lol.

Yep, 500-550*F can take it's toll on less than new door gaskets.
More unneeded air leaking in equals more unwanted heat output...control the air and you will control the fire/heat.

Look for coal crumbs where the air comes in...
Slightly hung up damper...
Mid 500* should not have done any damage...
Trust me...
They can take that level of heat all day long...
Look also for the gasket gaps if you got too small gasket it will leak enough air to be wonky...

I'm going with gaskets. One thing you can check though is; is something holding the back flapper door open slightly? An example would be the magnet protruding out, bend in flapper door, etc....

So to update you guys I changed the gasket on the ash pan door and also found that the slide damper on the door was a little bit too loose. I tightened that up so I can still slide it if I need to. I think that may be what was letting the extra air in. I haven’t lit the stove back up yet but will probably be looking to get some heat in the house today when I get home. Will let yas know what happens.
