- Coal Size/Type: Lehigh rice
- Other Heating: Lopi Freedom wood burning insert
I recently bought a used 50-93 and will fixing it up this Summer.
Has Old-style hopper and a blower
Hitzer tag is missing from rear of unit
It needs the following:
Front grate
Replacement of several cracked firebrick
All gaskets
Paint
Glass has slight crazing -might replace it later. Glass to door seal/gasket needs replaced.
Can anyone give some advice on resealing the glass?
I’m unsure of what material (flat rope gasket?) to use for the glass - loose or tight?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you!
Lots of changes since my last post.
Refurbed an EFM520 to replace my hand fed bit boiler (LOVE this stoker)
It lives in its own room attached to a large, heated, 2-story detached garage. it also feeds 4 slant-fin baseboard zones in my house using a 60’ run of 1.25” insulated underground PEX. This was my first winter running the stoker and I’m really impressed!
I haven’t decided on a home for the Hitzer yet, but I’ll find one...
I fear that I’ve contracted an illness that may lead to a collection of black-rock-burning metal boxes.

Call Hitzer and talk to them. They will have the gasket material you need for a decent price, it will be flat and adhesive in one side. All parts will be available and cheapest through Hitzer. Sounds like fun so keep us posted.

Thanks Hoytman !
I can source most of the other parts locally and probably save on shipping, but I’ll check with Hitzer first.

If you go under the specifications on Hitzers website it tells you all the size gaskets you need, with the exception of the glass gasket which makes me think it is specific to the stove. The door gasket is 3/4 rope gasket, the ash door is half inch, this lists the old style hopper door gasket at 1 1/2. I order the rope gasket off ebay. I use the black gasket

It’s definitely a good stove. Well worth restoring. I would suggest calling Hitzer directly and getting the parts you need. Ebay has a grate. I wouldn’t suggest it. it doesn’t look exactly like the original in the stove. It looks thinner. You don’t want an inferior grate getting hot and warping. The original grates can handle quite a bit of heat - even from occasionally running it too hot.
If the glass is that ‘ugly’ and you’d rather replace it. Hitzer’s OE replacement comes with the seal.
I’ve bought a bunch of stuff from Hitzer directly. No matter whom you speak with they are nice, courteous and knowledgeable. My last purchase, two weeks ago, was a bi-metallic thermostat and air inlet door chain assembly. They shipped it same day. And I got it within a day or two. I bought these items for a new project I’m about to take on.

The price of parts from Hitzer is very reasonable. I would just figure out what you need and order it from your local dealer (or direct from Hitzer if you don't have a dealer).

I have a few dealers locally but will likely order directly from the mfr. I can replace all the needed parts plus new gasketed glass for around $200 + shipping.

Rear grate has a 1/16” sag, but it moves freely.
Center bar of grate support is sagged, but doesn’t impede movement of the grates.
No other evidence of heat damage in the form of weld cracks or warping.
Blower runs and is fairly quiet - I’ll add a rheostat.
I’m estimating $200-$300 in parts / paint.
Should have a pretty good stove for a max total expenditure of under $400.
She’s gonna sit for a while - I’ll post more when I start on it.

Make me think they caught something in the grates while hot, and forced it, bending center grate bar, and breaking fingers off the grate. Other than gaskets, the stove looks pretty good... Some people abuse everything...

I’m guessing a full ash pan - or pileup of ash under front grate.
The missing teeth are actually melted off - one formed what looks like a cast iron icicle. Front grate badly warped. Maybe someone forgot to close the ash door. Luckily no damage to the box.
I’ll post a better pic of the grate later.
