Just installed the stove yesterday curred the paint with wood and today iam lighting it up with coal. Every time I open the door to add a shovel of coal smoke comes out the door. I don't think it should be doing this. Can you guys open your door and not have smoke come out. Ash door is open and flapper on back is all the way open because iam trying to light it.

If I remember ya have an MPD???????????? Always have that wide open when opening--close bi-metallic flap & ash door vents--I--maybe twice in 10+ yrs. have had smoke come out the glass door--never hopper door--something is going on with your draft!!!!!! Did you put a baro in??? Are ya keepin the hopper topped off consistently??

No mpd and no baro one T off the back of the stove straight up 15 feet. Stove is not loaded up enough to fill the hopper yet this is my first time putting in coal and iam slowly building up the coal bed. Flapper door on back side open and so is the ash pan door just to get the coal bed started. Every time I open the door to add more coal smoke comes out.

Close bi-metallic--it's blowin smoke fwd.--good on the no MPD or Baro!! So you're just now startin stove up?? Also, slow down on your initial fill. Are ya using match light? Also--if ya leave glass door open during the whole bottom feeding it might work better then opening & closing.

Already checked it last night I do have one and I had .4 to .5 I closed the ash pan door before I threw some more shovel fills in and I didn't have any smoke come out. Also I don't think I was letting the coal burn enough before adding more

Outstanding S--closing the ash pan door curtailed any draft coming through from the bi-metallic & yes, the initial lighting off requires a lot of patience which I myself have little of!! LOL Glad ya got it straightened out. You also now know that no matter how many gadgets ya have--the basics are much more important. Ya done good!

Close the Ash door when opening the loading door. Bi metallic flap bring open should not be enough to cause an issue.

Let the coal get burning bright before you add more, and never add more coal to the stove than what is already burning well.

Rule of thumb; One door open to a time.... Draft will pull in the open door.

Sounds like you got it going, keep adding coal until you get up to the hopper, fill the hopper, set the thermostat to where you like it and walk away! Shake the ash every 12 hours and refill the hopper. I personally have my ash pan vent cracked open slightly, you can just see a little orange glow with it burning hot, I noticed with it closed the left side of my coal bed was all but dead. Every set up is different you may have to figure out what works for you. Should be able to keep it going until spring no problem!

Well so far I have had the stove going all Sunday and through the night. I have had it cruising along now around 280 ash pan vents open about a 16th of an inch and dial set between 7 and 8 on my setup. Burning pea coal thought I might want nut coal for when it gets cold.. ha no way this will burn me out of the house with pea coal.

Pea coal works well with the hopper setup. I would just keep using that.
