try it

so far it sounds like you have it maybe half way turned up.

remember, temp is controlled by air going thru the fire. all coal has pretty much the same potential btu content

Yeah I'll just stick with pea coal unless I run into a draft issue but I don't think I will. I have a T on the back of the stove then straight up 15'. I'll be curious to see when it gets in the 50's outside if I can idle the stove down far enough to not burn me out of the house

Just let it ash up a bit more...
Cut the tending to every 24 hours...

Well so far I have had the stove going all Sunday and through the night. I have had it cruising along now around 280 ash pan vents open about a 16th of an inch and dial set between 7 and 8 on my setup. Burning pea coal thought I might want nut coal for when it gets cold.. ha no way this will burn me out of the house with pea coal.
I've been burning nut but I got a few bags of pea to try. I notice the nut gets stuck in my hopper sometimes. The last couple bags of nut I opened has some big pieces. Looks like stove coal to me

Stove coal will bridge in the hopper. A few years ago Freetown Fred tried being clever and running a mix of but and stove...I believe the hopper bridging was why he switched back to straight nut.

I saw his 1 post with stove coal, I'm not having a bridging issue, im having an issue of the larger pieces getting stuck in the hopper. Youd think pea would bridge easier than stove would

We burned one ton of buck in our 50-93, the one thing everyone commented on was how easy it was to shake down and how well the coal flowed out of the hopper to fill the firebox. Pea should be similar.

That is some information that I will be remembering. Plus I have 5 bags of pea coal to try. I can apply the info above to burning it as well. Still burning nut until temps reach the 50’s.

You will find, if you want serious heat, nut is what you will want in your Hitzer. However, if you are able to heat your house with pea, so be it.... Pea does flow nicely...

Pea is a different animal it seems. Not quite sure what to think of it or say about it. I’d like to burn another 40 bags of it through the stove before I could really comment versus nut. Blashak bagged nut was nice sized pieces, uniform, and clean, and their bagged pea was the same...all about the size of a quarter and clean as can be. Very clean shovel loading from both.

I made a mix of nut and pea for the last couple weeks I used the Hitzer. The coal flowed out of the hopper nice and burned nice. May do that again next year

I do the same in my 983. Works real well for me. I mix 50/50 nothing real precise but as close as I can get it.

The last 20 bags of Blaschak nut I got was more like stove coal size, so I got 10 bags of pea and mixed them. New the new bags of nut i have basically have pea mixed in lol. I'm not sure what's going on there
