Mine is at the bottom of the door. Would be about 100°F higher if towards the top.

Decided to set it no higher, can use electric blanket if needed.

That is where I usually run it, air vent open 3/4 turn. The most I go is one turn, reading will go over 700 then. Amazing how a small change in underfire air affects the burn.

No way do I want my Riteway that hot as I'd be outside, but my temp magnet used to fall off once in a while on my last stove while burning off volatiles with secondary air.... trust me, there wasnt any danger, but I dont recommend it.

I once (last year) had the bottom 1/4 of the loading door orange.

Kinda scared me, it was uncomfortable to stand within 6 feet.

Had the top of my 503 Hitzer a dull orange...
Cast iron on the hopper loading door...
Magnets on the two thermometers permanently demagnetized...
lesson learned never walk away from the stove...
With the ash door open...
Full load of Nut coal...
For 5 hours...
Just goes to show ya...
Proper install...
And the setbacks...
Worthwhile investment...
Hitzers built like tank...
Stove suffered no damage...
House was still there too...

Wow, I love these "HAWT" stories! I mostly think the pipes, or should I say the things that happen with them, cause more problems than the stoves. Exceptions of course with no firebricks in steel stoves, etc, but pipes are more fragile.

I remember seeing a Efel stove, same model as one that i used years ago, on Craigslist with the whole front glass panes warped and melted away for sale cheap. Obvious they left the bottom door open but I guess that probably caused the coal fire to go out with over fire air but it really caught my attention!

Had the Hitzer turned up in this pic. I've seen the chimney on my woodstove between 800 and 1000 already

My uncle forgot the Ash door open on his Hitzer 82. It got hot enough that the spring on the thermometer broke and launched the thermometer across the basement.
