First coal stove setup. Hitzer 50-93
Drove 3 hrs one way to williamsport pa to pick up this hitzer 50-93 and also ended up getting this dovre focus stove as well. Paid 400 for the hitzer and 80 for the dovre.
Theres a lack of good coal stoves in the second hand market in south western pa and i was glad to find this hitzer as this is the coal stove i had decided on.
So finally got it set up. Had to modify the flu of my fire place that is in the basement.
Cut the flue plate into two smaller pieces and then used some furnace cement to hold them in place and provide a good seal. I used a cheap caulk gun and wish i had a better one lol the stuff is tough to shoot out (would have helped if the tube of cement was warmer).
Had some ceramic insulation laying around for a santa maria grill /oven im fabricating so i used the ceramic insulation to seal the 6” exhaust pipe to the modified fire place flu. Good stuff. That ceramic insulation packs down nicely and i think it should work well.
My stove pipe is only about 4’ up past the fire place flu ( thats about where the clay liner starts.
Let me know what you guys think. Or if u have any suggestions. I kinda did this on the quick as i just bought this house and have several other projects going on right now with it before we can move in. So i may re do the stove pipe with stainless possibly next year.

O, good deal!! Looks like an oldie but goody!! Mine's about a 1990 Does that HITZER have one or two grates--hard to tell from pix--she looks right at home there on the hearth!! Nice on the pipe-work!! Personally--I would NOT bother with the stainless--of course--I wouldn't bother with the BARO either!!! I would of put the T in the downward angle & capped it so clean out would be functional--I do mine twice per season--I think the way ya got the BARO will create more ash build up. Just an old farmers thoughts
Its got two grates. 1993 year.
Ya all the reading ive done so far seems most say a barometric damper is a good addition. Having it that close to the stove was my only option as the elbow and stove pipe through the fireplace is directly after.
Just poured a 40lb bag of nut in and getting it started. Not sure at what point to shut the front vent and get it riding into a sweet spot but well see what happens.

It's all trial & error now--each house is different--when reading suggestions, look & see what particular that poster has experience with, at least I find that helpful. Back in the 90's HITZER didn't even mention BARO's due to the bi-metallic thermo set-up. What do you use to get the coal goin?
