Try http://www.yukon-eagle.com/ ,they manufacture multifuel furnaces, with the coal grate option burn wood, coal and oil or natural gas,if the fire goes out the oil or gas option thermostatically starts up.Keystoker makes one with an oil gun that can be plugged in if you're leaving for vacation etc,Harman has one that works like the yukon-eagle,y-e and Harman are hand fired on the solid fuel. Hi,
Go to http://www.marathonheaterco.com ( or type in logwood boiler).
Thes units are manufactured in Richford NY. They make a quality boiler or furnace. The (Yankee coal model series) grates and firebox are designed to burn coal very well. Talk to a rep or the manufacturer and get some info sent to you.

Hello gatesboy23,

I found this (below) on the Binghamton Craigslist. I know nothing about it other than what is listed. It might work for you. Best of luck. By the way, I am searching for a coal boiler - stoker type - if you happen upon one.

Welcome to the forum John. There are many coal appliances that will burn both coal & wood & perhaps we could be of more assistance if you gave us some more info on your home's size, layout, location of any fireplaces, current heating system, budget etc. The trap you should try to avoid is starting out too small & then wishing that you had done something to completely satisfy your heating needs. (It' kinda like a boat owner who buys a small boat & then almost immediately wants a bigger boat!)
Once you save a little money & are warmer, you'll want to save even more money & be even more comfortable! Buy the right coal appliance the first time.

Good Luck!

you guys are all awsome and very helpful. I am purchasing a old farm house built in 1908. The addition was put on in 1950. No isulation to speak of yet and I don't know how far I will get on ripping the plaster and lath out this year to re insulate. it is about 1500 sq ft and has a oil furnace forced air right now. I am looking for used since I don't have much money to throw into just one project. I am looking into add ons but they are very expensive and my basement is very small, hand dug an too creapy for my wife to enter haha. Thanks for the help y'all.

125,000BTU/wood, 140,000btu /coal, German made, comes complete with all plumbing. It is in excellent condition, no cracks and ready to plumb in. It is a '90's model, very hard to find "wet" boiler by one of the best names in the business. It is similar to a Tarm. Buderus has been around since the 1800's and their furnaces are legendary. It has higher BTU output if you were to burn coal. It can take a 22" log. Do not confuse this with an outdoor wood boiler. This goes in your basement and burns only seasoned hardwood. This unit will heat your house (so long as you have radiators or baseboard/radiant floor heating) and make all your hot water for showers/dishes/etc. It ties in with your present oil/gas furnace. As long as you keep it fed with wood or coal: your conventional furnace never kicks on unless you slack off or go away for the weekend. One really nice thing is you get to burn wood without any of the mess or smell. The whole operation stays in the basement, so no tracking in mud, wood mess or smelling smoke and cleaning soot from walls/curtains. Its all cast iron and pretty simple in operation. This boiler is extremely heavy: as in it needs a dolly or 4 men or machine. I can load w/ machine on my end. I have no interest in selling it for anything less than I posted it here for. It's over $9K to replace it. Read more on it:

I have a add-on Harman SF1500-A forced air coal / wood furnance connected downstream to the existing oil furnance and am using the oil furnance blower to to circulate the air through the existing duct work. This works very well for me and installation was easy. With coal this system kept the house at 71 degrees during single digital temps last year.
I did burn wood after letting the coal fire burn out during colder nights/days in late march and april instead of starting a coal fire. The house is a ranch with insulated windows and insulted walls. I only used the oil when I was to lazy to start a fire or bring wood to the house late in the burning season.

For reasonable price you can also look at hitzer 82's. They are a simple design hand fire coal or wood. I paid $980 for mine new. I haven't used it yet, but it is rated for 80,000 btu. Good luck at finding something good.
