Hand Fed Coal Stove: need parts

Post by [email protected] » Sat. Aug. 17, 2019 2:14 am

I have an original Shipmate 212 in unused condition. My grandfather was a scrap dealer and probably picked it up years ago.It needs the legs, top rail and the lower left door.I have tried to contact Shipmate directly with no luck.I received a response but no contact after that.Any suggestions?I would like to restore to original condition.I appreciate all the input I can get.
Thank you

Welcome, Carter.

Many of those got scrapped post war, when boats upgraded to the easier to find fuels for kerosene or alcohol stoves. Gonna be tough finding parts.

You might have better luck if you try some of the antique boat restoration groups. Or "cruising class" websites.

I figured this hunt would not be easy.My best bet may be finding someone with an old rusted out stove that I can salvage the parts from.

One other possibility is find someone with the same stove and see if they will loan the parts to use as patterns to have recasts made by a foundry like Tomahawk that does recasting of a lot of antique stove parts. http://www.tomahawkfoundry.com/

Some of us do that to help others with the antique stoves we have.

Just saw that Shipmate is still in business. You might ask them if they can supply parts ?

Thats a good idea about having the parts made.I did get in touch with someone at Shipmate. It looks like it is for sale and he may have been a broker. We emailed a couple of times but that was it.I will look around for someone with a stove,if you hear of anyone that is willing to help out let me know.
Thank you so much,
Andy

Something to keep in mind if you do go for recasts from a loaner original part.

Cast iron shrinks as it cools in the mold. The casting patterns are always made a standard amount larger to allow for that shrinkage. Using an original part as the mold sand pattern, the recast parts come out smaller than the original. The standard for cast iron is a loss of 1/8 inch per foot of length. So a recast from a 12 inch part would actually be 11-7/8 inch when it cooled down after casting.

With a small stove as yours it may not matter if the parts are a bit smaller, but check just to be sure that won't cause a problem with fit of the parts. If it is, the original part can be made larger by adding Bondo, or the foundries use a special thick wax that can be easily removed after the molding process.
