Hand Fed Coal Stove: Hitzer 50-93
Coal Size/Type: Lehigh Nut

I've been heating with a Brunco wood stove for the past 10 years. It served my old man before that since 1984. I'm going to being switching over to anthracite for next winter. I'm looking at the Hitzer 50-93 or 30-95. I'm wondering what DS Anthra-max and Circulator model stoves would be comparable to those Hitzer models?

Stove will be located in my basement that is mostly underground so its not too difficult to heat. 1200 sq ft basement and a main floor of 1200. My current stove is forced air and I have the ability to hook it into my central air duct work, but I usually leave it drawing and blowing out in the basement only unless it gets 20 deg or below, then I'll hook it to the ducts. When leaving the stove just drawing and blowing into my basement, the main floor typically stays 2-3 degrees cooler than my basement. I have a centrally located stairwell that allows the basement heat to move up. As an example, it is 29 outside, I'm currently running my stove at a medium to low heat and my basement is 72 and my main floor is 70.

I really think the 30-95 would be plenty 90% of the time for my winters here in Ohio, but I'm leaning towards the larger 50-93 because of the basement location. I have a few Hitzer dealers within a couple of hours drive, Lehman's has a good price, but there aren't any DS dealers nearby that I'm aware of. I'd like to know the DS equivalents so I can call a dealer and get a price on one with shipping. Thoughts and recommendations welcome. Thanks.

There is a DS dealer up by me in Northeast Ohio, Cherry Valley stoves. That's where I bought my DS1500 back in the fall.

Either one is nice...
Had a DS basement #4 in the old house...
No fan noise...
Can put a hood over to circulate hot air like an Amish setup...
Have a Hitzer 503 in the new house...
Fan noise annoys me but you get used to it...
Going to relocate fan to basement and an inline fan to cut down on noise...

I think I've settled on the 50-93. Any issues in using my existing 8" Metalbestos stack and reducing down to 6" above the stove?

No issues...
Just check for ash on the flats and elbows...
Use a tee with a cleanout for ease of cleaning...

We got our new DS Stoves 2100WH this season and so far we love it. Great quality and is a heat monster. Got it towards the end of the season so i didnt get to see it in peak winter. Still have some air movement issues i need to work out in the house but thats not the stoves fault.
