White ash or red ash coal? Red will clinker where white will be more powdery, and that is like sheet rock dust on draft.

How warm should my gauge be reading on the top of the stove? 700 degrees said above seems like it would be rippin at that temp.
Don't compare Vigilant temps, to Hitzer temps. They are completely different stoves. I would also leave your inline manual damper open. With the Hitzer, you want strong draws. That's what closes the primary air flapper door. The ash pan vents is what adjusts the intensity of idle fire. Fred gave you the right settings. Dennis gave you a nice tip. More usefull on the 30-95, but can be used on the 50-93. The 50-93 is pretty much a straight forward, very user friendly stove. It could also be the coal. That being said, the 50-93 is not a finicky stove. I found the 50-93 to not care much about different coal qualities. I'd have to guess your problem is ash build up. Only a guess. One more thing that can cause your symptoms is a warped hopper. Does your coal hang up in the hopper? The coal below the hopper burns out. No coal feeding down from hopper.

Never had a clinker in 10 yrs. burnin BLASCHAK NUT--can't imagine what's goin on with ya. Ya keepin the hopper full--cleanin sides on occasion--ash door vents cracked--bi-metallic flap set properly???????????????????
Hopper gets filled twice a day. Shake down the ash in the morning, fill it, shake it down a little more, empty ash pan in evening, shake down, fill hopper, shake down a little again. Cleaning sides? Ash door vents are quarter moon open. Flap appears to be set properly according to my upstairs temperature (65-70 degrees) for which I set the flap to .

I actually questioned myself on if what I was seeing were clinkers, then googled images, and sure enough, that's what they were. That was with nut size. Went to pea and have had absolutely no issues. Even when the fire was low it was easy to get going again. With nut it just seemed to randomly go out. Not a lot mind you, but enough to tick me off. But it was because of the clinkers.

Stove runs around 400-600 degrees according to magnetic thermometer on front. Stack runs around 200.

I've finally found a happy setting for my stove, and diagnosing it at this point is futile. It's doing what I wanted it to do in the first place, and I can go (due to job, etc) 15+ hours between refills without much worry about it going out.

It hasn't gone out since November, and I stupidly decided to let it finally die out the other day in hopes of warmer weather. That is a regret I won't make next year!

Note to self: keep stove burning until April. keep stove burning until April. keep stove burning until April.
OMG did I forget how cold my bathroom floor was without the stove running in the basement!!! Place is completely cold until I reluctantly turn on the electric heat. This month's electric bill is going to suck.
