McGeiver at its best, why grind the treads they will wear by themselves and it is more metal, be it a tiny bit.

Grade 8,5,3, doesn't matter. The threads will wear down sooner or later so long as they will fit in the hole tonight for you. Slap it together and start the warming again, it'll be fine.

As a mechanic I often worry about things I've repaired not holding together until a month or two later it dawns on me it's still running strong. You and I probably both worry too much. These things are tougher than any truck I've ever seen.

Well I tried to wiggle it in with the stove running, couple burns later I realized there's no way I am going to have to lift out the outer grates and then slide the bolt in the middle grate then lower the outer grates back in. Good news is it seems to be perfect size! No need to grind threads off. Ill tackle tomorrow, for now I just shook the middle grate and added a couple lbs to get us through the night. Ill post after.

shes running!! and shaking better then ever!!!!!! i guess the old warn nipple that broke off had so much play that the middle grate would shake alot before the other grates shook at all, well now its the perfect size and they all shake evenly and i couldnt be happier!!

Congrats.

To paraphrase an old saying,... For want of a bolt, the warmth war was not lost. :D

i had to take out the back fire bricks to get the outer grates out so i just took them all out and cleaned the whole stove out and replaced a couple bricks that cracked... i feel like the stove is throwing out more heat at the same temp on the face for some reason... maybe the heat transfer is better when shes clean? i know more coal is definately burning because the outsides had alot of ash build up from the horrible shaking action from the warn connecting rod nipple. but yeah shes a beast! heating the whole house with an outside temp of 25-30 degrees with a face temp of only 400! seems to be better then ever!
