I have a modern (1987) "Split level" house and I have a big Harmon handfired stove in my den on the ground level floor (I hesitate to call it a basement) and let natural convection circulate the heat upstairs, but I'll tell you when the stove has been lit you can feel the heat as you come downstairs...
One of my cats has taken to being a "Ceiling Cat" by climbing on a bookshelf and through a missing drop ceiling panel.
I don't turn on the circulation fan on the stove because it spoils the heat flow to the upstairs.
Good Deal?

I agree. Now that i am aware of the fact that i can purchase a stove that will heat my entire home as well as radiate some warmth to that cool basement that will be the direction i will be going.
Hopefully i can find some time to go take a look at that Harman this week, I'm not against refurbishing.
