So I have been sampling a couple bags of Lehigh since Saturday before buying bulk. I have to say I’m quite pleased with the coal. The ash is a little bit whiter, the heat a little hotter at the same air settings, and the ash a little less.

The point of this post is though I bought a couple bags of nut but I also bought 2 bags of PEA COAL. What I have found is that by mixing the two together(not straight pea), the smaller size coal mix spreads out of the hopper MUCH MUCH better than straight nut coal. Has anybody else noticed or tried this? Just my results. Figured I’d pass this on for others to try.

Range coal...
Straight Pea flows out the Hopper real nice...
But will bridge if fired too hard...
Good for the spring and fall...
The mix is good for those days when it pops to 50* after it has been in the teens...

Yes. My brother actually burned a ton of buck size coal in his 50-93, and he said the same thing as you - it shook down really easy and flowed out of the hopper really well.

Wow Im surprised buck didnt fall through the grates! Thats why I didnt dump a full load of pea in the stove. I guess pea would be ok as long as you took it easy shaking it down. I find a lot of times with nut size that it stacks up in the hopper and wont flow out on its own throughout the burn which kind of negates the purpose of the hopper. Also, sometimes with straight nut even when I shake it down, I find that i have to help the coal out of the hopper with my poker to get an even distribution of coal

Never had an issue with Nut in the 503...
Once a week I let it run down 2" below the bottom of the hopper...
And give a nice ash cleanout to the rear corners...
Fronts too but they are easier to get at even with a full hopper...

What brand of coal do you use? I find that the stockton Im burning currently has nut size that is partly on the brink of stove size. I have blashak in another bin that is slightly smaller. Still however it doesnt flow out the range coal I just used in it. I could sit downstairs with the blower of and hear the pieces of coal occasionally falling out of the hopper. Not so with straight nut size.

Using Lehigh Bulk...
I even rod the hopper to pack more in...
I'll pull the bigger pieces off the outside edge of the pile when its cold...
Middle of the pile gets smaller and more fines...
Ran Santa Coal nut no issues in the ''rents 503...
