Hand Fed Coal Stove: Keystoker HF 70/90

Post by lucid484 » Thu. Jan. 31, 2019 7:03 pm

So I bought a house in May that has a Keystoker HF 70/90 in the family room. The house is 2200sq ft and the window in the loft is open to the entire up stairs. I cannot believe how awesome this little stove heats my house and how great Anthracite is.

It took me a month of learning how to get a coal fire going and was extremely frustrating. But After many rounds of it running for a week 24/7, I have had it running for over a month 24/7 without stopping. I put a bucket (1/2 bag) in the morning after I shake down before work and a bucket in before bed.

My question is that after a few crazy burns early on, some up to almost 900 degrees before I learned it's proper use. I messed up the adjustment for the heat regulator on the back. I'm still playing with it to get the temps right as it has been below zero here at night. Is there a correct time to set the regulator for optimum heat output? is it on a cold stove or hot? I can't find any information on setting it in my manual.

Just observe the steady temp it is putting out and adjust higher or lower

I did try that...But something weird starts happening. If I lower the knob the door opens more and lets more air in, thus stoking the fire more. I'm playing around with it tonight. I have the thermometer on the stove up to 650 degrees and the flu is at 280 degrees. I just tried turning the know down a notch and the door opened more. I hope that makes sense.

if you turn the knob up does it close a bit...
Does the bimetalic have a removable cover...
Not sure with Keystokers...

Restricter plate, I think is what it might be called if its in the manual. Thats if it has one. You may have to call Keystoker and ask them about it and yes it would matter. Good idea CC and I think thats what your thinking of.

When the stove is running at it's normal 400-500 degrees then yeah the knob closes the door when turned down and opens it up when turned up. But when the stove gets too hot 600+ then the knob does the opposite, you try to turn the airflow know down and the door opens up causing the stove to over fire. Perhaps it could just be running at its max safe temp around 500ish. I just wanted to know if anyone knew of a way to "zero" out the knob properly because I messed it's original setting up.

last night it was -5 outside so I adjusted the chain on the door and stove over fired to about 750+ degrees and to room became extremely hot, so I had to manually close the door to get it under control again. But like I said other than this one little thing I can't quite get dialed in, my stove has been running beautifully 24/7 for a month+ now...

Here are pics of my stove running nice now with stove temp, flue temp and pictures of the heat regulator assembly.

Take a pic of the regulator straight on any screws or such to remove cover...
sometimes the coil gets messed-up inside...
And the chain gets caught...

I believe you have the chain much too short and the bi-metal coil on heating, has past center and works opposite. Lengthen the chain.
