How hard would any Crane 404 users push the 404 (stove top temps) in extended single digit cold weather? I am at 500 and don't want to crack the firebox that is cast and a bit tender from all reports.

When I got up at 4 am that is about where it was high 500's. The draft picked up a bit and pulled a little more air and took it from 550 to a tad short of 600. DCrane mentioned years ago that to go easy on the fire pot as it is hard to find a good one and replacements worth more than the stove. I have followed all his advise and has served me well to get what the stove is capable of and what to not ask it to do. WE just never defined what was firing it real hard or as usual I forgot. When you lose your glasses every now and them what is too hot for the stove can get lost easy too. LOL

Just finally got mine fired up. Went to 600 pretty easily with the spinners out 3 turns. Took them back to 1 turn and will see where I end up. No MPD yet, but have one on the bench ready to go. Will try to post some pics later.
