I got the fireplace rebuilt and sold the wood stove insert. I replaced it with the DS Machines coal insert, installed it yesterday and fired it up today. Really easy to get going, and has been throwing a lot of heat today. Only thing I don’t like about it is the hopper door, there’s no hinge so you need to remove it, so now I’m trying to figure out what to do with the door while I fill up. Here’s some pictures of the new fireplace and one of the old.

is there a particular issue with laying the door on the hearth ? if you use a small fire proof hearth rug it would keep both the hearth and door from getting marked up and could be folded or rolled up and set aside.

It’s not a Hitzer 503, but I don’t wanna lay it on the hearth as it’s lime stone. Don’t wanna scratch it up, same with the top of the stove. Probably just use some old leather gloves to protect the hearth to lay it on.

The fire proof gloves will do the trick...
The gasket on the bottom of the 503 lid keeps it off the metal of the stove...
Trivet...

After re-reading I got what you were trying to say. I’m a little slow sometimes 😂. The ds has a metal latch that hangs lower than the gasket so that’s not an option for me.

Does it have one or two ash drawers?

With the fan in the back bottom of the unit, do you readily hear it when it is turned up all the way?
[been wondering if it muffles the sound of it running]

1 drawer, and it’s noticeable at low speed. A little louder than I would have liked but it is what it is.

Going to modify the 503 this summer...
Hate the fan noise...
Loved the DS #4 no fan just quiet heat...
But flue wise the insert was the only way to go for now...
Remote inline fan in basement running from far side of house...
Up from basement into fan openings...

Hi Jersey Guy
So with the blower in the rear,I assume you will have to pull out the insert to service the blower correct? That could make for a hassle.

Remove the fire brick and there’s an access panel in the rear. Ands there’s supposedly a disconnect plug in the motor to remove it. Supposed to be able to remove it without removing the insert, but we shall see

As I recall the manual has the steps to perform replacing the fan, you should not have to pull the insert out of the fireplace as I recall.

Jerseyguy,
Would you take a photo of the unit from an angle to show the side and front of the unit that includes the bi-metal draft regulator? post it up here... I have seen it on their other products but not on the insert, I am curious.

I’ll try to get one tonight, it’s covered by a grate so not sure if it will be visible.

Nice! I like how they used the cover.
Thanks for posting the pictures.

Please post on this same thread at the end of the season the things you like and don't like about it.
