Nice looking setup.
I have been interested in the DS inserts, I do the idea of having the bi-metal draft regulator.
But, having to remove firebrick to get to the blower motor doesn't sound good.
I have had to replace both of mine on my Hitzer 503 and I have never shut the insert down to do so.
Pull the fan power, remove the bad fan, button it back up and run with one fan till the replacement came
in and repeat.

That was an upside to the hitzer. The deciding factor on the ds over the other inserts was the external shaker. I wasn’t fond of opening the ash fort to shake, the dust seems like it has more chance of making a mess.

Yes I will see a small amount come out the door while I'm shaking it down,
if I open the upper baffle the draft seems to pull most of it up and out.

A bit comes out when I slice...
It sticks to the slicer I'm using now...
But a good draft sucks 95% back into the stove...
This is an older 503 without the adjustable draft...
The draft reducer is in place so it is like the adjustable closed off...

The used Hitzer 503 vintage 2004...
insert cost $300...
The real cost...
Different story...
$100 for the overnight stay,$150 gas, $150 food and bar, $250 for the 18 bottles of wine...
Just had to go vineyard hopping on the lake...
1000 miles on the van and 14 hours of driving...
But a fun weekend adventure...
Even including...
A 3 cop adventure...
Town, County and a fine NYS Trooper...
In Watkins Glen, NY...
At a bar, half a block from the bar that two guys stabbed another patron...
Cops walk in at 11:30 pm guns drawn...
Priceless...
New Hitzer can be had for about $2400...

Sounds like a fun time,If I ever need to take a ride to pick up a stove I know who I'm taking.I'm in Athol Ma, opposite end of the state from you. I meant how much for a new DS insert.

Sorry I didn’t realize there was a new post, the ds was $2400.

So a quick update to how the stove is running. Last week here in south jersey like most of the country we were in some very cold weather. The stove was flawless, used ~60 lbs of coal(2 buckets, 1 every 12 hours) a day and kept the house warm. The weather today and yesterday was 60 so we ran it on low- medium and the house was very warm but not uncomfortable. Very pleased with how it’s working.

What size area are you heating? To what temperature? Thanks! The DS insert is great looking.

1900 sqft ranch just a big rectangle with a hallway down the middle, it’s in the front of the house. The thermostat read 68-70 at 5am and by 7am would be 72-74 all day. The back of the house we leave the hot water baseboard set at 62 and would run for maybe 2-3 hours a day. Because where/how the house is laid out it is probably 5 degrees cooler in the surrounding rooms. Today with it being 60 the stove was on low and the back of the house was still 69, so the heat does move around, but not like a 2 story house would.

I also have 2 ceiling fans running, one in the back of the house and one over the stove. Also let the central air fan run 15 min every hour(thanks to the nest). This seems to help move the air around.

Any additional updates? What dislikes other than the lid have you noticed? Are you running a liner with to or no? Ive pretty much made up my mind that I'm switching from wood->coal this off season and leaning toward the DS, just prefer the styling over the hitzler.
Id love any additional photos as well, as the local shop doesnt have one to look over in person...
