I love any kind of harman hand fired stove!! Nice find there. The harman grates in my opinion are second to none. Id love to put a little mark one in my living room but no chimney!! Maybe because I grew up running a mark 3. This 60 degree weather is for the birds! Im ready to settle into the low20s-30s routine and 15 or so at night with some snow

- Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Harman SF3500 reduced down to 3 grates connected to its own plenum

- Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood

It was pretty cold and very windy when I got up this morning. About 7 weeks ago I finally tamed my Axeman Anderson 130M boiler and it is working flawlessly with very, very good fuel mileage.
So to relieve the boredom, I got some wood out of the wood pile, through a good layer of coal in the bottom of the Harman and fired it up. These logs have been in there for over 5 hours. I was actually surprised they lasted. Later this evening I will give it a shake and load it up with coal.
One thing I need to mention about this Harman is, when I installed it 8 years ago I didn't connect the wiring for the automatic draft control in the ash door. Instead I removed the motor, removed the flapper and installed one of the door spinners in it's place. Then I installed the flapper in the fire door. It was an easy swap and took about 20 minutes. My Harman furnace operates just like a Harman stove does as a result. I just wanted to make sure everyone realized that you can get one of these furnaces and operate them with no electricity just like a stove. A lot of times you can find the furnaces cheaper than the stoves. Unless you are putting it in your living room, the furnace is the way to go.
Front temp. Plenum temp is 150. That's a bit high, probably because we are burning wood. Draft is -.015. Still just running the cheap box fan on the back of the furnace instead of a blower. Strangely enough, this works great and is nearly silent. -Don
And the ash is looking like it should, big clinkers and powdery ash.
The only problem is, it gets a bit boring! I take the ashes out every 4 to 6 days and that's it!So to relieve the boredom, I got some wood out of the wood pile, through a good layer of coal in the bottom of the Harman and fired it up. It's hard to believe that its been almost 3 years sine I updated this thread.
This week it has finally been cold enough to fire up the Harman! Normally I fire it up when I am off for Christmas but this year it was 60 and even 70 degrees that whole week. Got some snow and cold weather for the first time so I got the urge to fire it up. Still just using the box fan on the back. This actually works real good for my install. About an hour after firing it up the plenum reads about 137*. Stack, about 220* I'll probably run it for the next few days just for fun.

Harman On Bit Coal!
I stopped by to see BunkerdCaddis today so I could check out the progress on the BairMatic / Van Wert stoker install. He was nice enough to give me a bucket of Bit coal to try out in the 'Ol Harman. Thanks Dwayne!
The Harman took to it pretty well. You do have to chop it up after it fires up. Otherwise it sticks together in a big clump. It works pretty well, I like it.
Here's some video action.

Fun stuff Don, all the types of bit I've played with do get smokey but I don't think the Fisher Nut smells so bad, certainly not as bad as the others. And thanks for stopping by!
