Hand Fed Coal Stove: Hitzer 254

Post by vess_40 » Sun. Dec. 16, 2018 1:20 pm

Greetings,
I’m a 8 year wood burner who’s making the switch to coal this year. I will be burning anthracite and bit as I have access to both.
I recently have purchased a 254 and have been reading through the manual before install. Can someone please explain the damper control above the door that dampens the flue collar? The manual doesn’t give it much detail only to open it fully when starting a fire, but it doesn’t say much about this damper after the fire is established. Can someone explain what position this damper needs to be after an established fire? I did some searching on the forums and couldn’t find much. Thanks

Vester

Much the same as a MPD in the stove pipe...
Restricts airflow just built into the body of the stove...

After the fire is established and burning well, close the damper all the way, that slows the fire allowing the stove to heat up instead of all the hot gasses going quickly up the chimney. Slows the burn down and saves coal.

Thanks for the replies. That damper makes sense now. We didn’t use those on the newer EPA wood stoves so it confused me. Much clearer now. I’m really liking my 254 and my switch to coal!

Do you have any pictures for us? We don't have much for HITZER 254 members...

It looks like its burning the bituminous nicely!! Im surprised to see your glass isnt pitch black. I was wondering about how the free standing stoves would act burning bituminous in a hitzer stove with no over fire air. Nice stove

Bit does soot up the glass really quick. After I reload in the evening and want the view of a glowing fire, I’ll scrape the glass with a razor blade, it takes about 30 seconds and comes off like frost on a windshield.

How does it act on a fresh load up. Does it try and puff back on you after youve put in a fresh charge and the bi metallic damper closes down?

Not yet, I’m still new to coal though. The size of bit I’ve been using is golf ball to baseball size so I think plenty of air is making its way up through the coal bed. I can’t wait to try anthracite in this thing. Going to give it a go in a couple days.

Thanks for the pictures. Nice looking stove. You'll like anthracite way better than bit. I did anyways....
