Hello there- I just started using coal in my DS Comfort Max 75 at the beginning of the week. It has mostly been working well with one exception - I can't seem to get a uniform fire across the entire coal bed. It seems like ash and unburnt coal in the corners with a strong fire in the middle. It also seems that I get a better fire - though not uniform - if I pile the coal in a mound in the center. Any advice on how to address these issues would be much appreciated. Pete in Vermont.

Corners tend to ash up in a square box...
Try a poke from the bottom in the corners...
Or a gentle poke from the top...
If you dare...

As CapeCoaler said "it is ash". If the fire is strong you can poke all you want from above or below.
