I am not sure what I am doing wrong, for the last week I keep losing my fire.
I get the fire going and it last between 5 and 8 hours. Fire is going good and I decide to shake down the ash. I open the bottom vents all the way and the damper all the way, but the temperature starts to go down until I lose the fire. This is weird not sure what I could being doing wrong. Suggestions please. Thanks

That seems like a very short burn time. Was the fire pot filled to the top? How hot was the stove run? Unless the fire is on its very last legs, giving it more air should liven it up.

I always fill up to top. My fires burn on avg 500. I close the bottom vents at night to keep it at 350 to 450.

I suspect inadequate ash clearing at the last tending, but this should not occur if the pot was cleaned for a fresh fire at least for several days.

What you describe seems like not enough fire left to recover.

Franco,
I never experienced the stove being hot 359° when I own vents then died within the next 20 minutes. But I will do a good clean out of stove then so what happens.

Vonda,
I had that happen to me often during my first season of burning. I make sure to poke the grates until hot coal falls in the ash pan during the evening tending. In the morning a put a scoop on top of the fire and open the dampers and let it burn for about a half hour. I can then shake down and re load with a strong fire.
I hope this helps,
Bob
