If you have the shaker handle, and the grate moves, clean out the wood ashes, and light it up!!!

Coalbrookdale stoves are a 'thing of beauty'-enjoy!

Looks OK to me. There may also be a baffle plate above the fire to direct the flue gas before exiting the stove. Not needed but flue gas temp. will be higher without it. Not sure if that stove has it, but the Severn model does.

Thanks for the help everyone - feeling a lot more confident now. I'm going to try and light up some coal this weekend - I'll let you know how it goes!

should be a clear opening between the grates. Mine Coalbrookdale has 13 grates, without coal on it or wood, you should be able to see to the bottom ash pan. Also, missing the front grate which is needed. Does look like wood only

The pictures are hard to see, but there is space between the shaker bars. I took the front bar out for pictures.
