Hand Fed Coal Stove: Chubby

Post by gblass1 » Wed. Nov. 21, 2018 12:29 am

Here are some before and after pictures of my Chubby. Amazing what a couple hours with a right angle grinder with a wire brush can do. After I got the rust off I hit it with 2 coats of stove polish. I replaced the mica in the door and ordered a new shaker grate and a door gasket kit from Larry. Put it all together and filled her belly up with coal today. Just checked and it settled down to 400 degrees and looks good for the night.

Sure will be nice not to be spending $1500 a winter to heat my shop.

Well I lost the fire last night. I had a feeling I should have topped it off before bed but wanted to play it safe since this was the maiden voyage.

Yup 2 mills and 2 lathes. Used to have 21 guys working for me. After 2008 when the economy tanked over the following couple years I had to let them all go. Now it’s just me and my wife.

If you start having ash build up in the elbow behind the stove you might want to put a clean out Tee pipe there. maybe you can go thru the front door, thru the damper and clean it that way too, but keep an eye on it.

Still, looking pretty nice all pimped out with new paint!

Looks great! The design of the chubby ( no brick) can get the heat out of the stove all over and kinda quickly too.
The top "lip" actually will curl over raised hot air on the sides and cause some circulation around it.
These chubbys are amazing for their size.. Once used to it and your draft, it will be your buddy !
