Hi I’m new to burning coal this year so I apologize if this is a foolish question, but my stove has been up and running for about a month and I just happened to look at my barometric damper today and noticed a whitish grey powder inside the pipe and all over the inside of the damper flap, is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?

That sounds like fly ash and is normal. It's what you clean out of your stove passages and flue pipe once or twice a year.
