Was not sure if that could be done or not. I just figured for efficiency or proper running the chimney should be the size the manufacturer designed it to be used with.

I think I remember reading Hitzer manuals somewhere, where they said downsizing ONE size would work.

But then, operating on old man memory. Your mileage will vary.

I went with the DS 1500 . Its a Hopper fed stove with a thermostatically controlled air inlet damper. No electrics to worry about. It also has a unique tube style heat exchanger to induce vertical hot air movement. just another model to consider. It does have the back stack outlet so that may not work for you.

just go with a 7-6 reducer right at the stove collar. the old time story was "you can go down one but, you shouldn't go up one, though i have seen that too and even two and there wasn't any problems.

all installations are diff. go with your gut, if you second guess from the start it will gnaw on you from then on.

354 will give a much better view of the fire than a 50-93 because there wont be a hopper blocking the view. May not be important to you though

Do not get the 50-93 then. If you want to buy a Hitzer get the 354.

Ive burned coal for 18 years. Most of that was with a Harman Mark 3. The 50-93 is much quicker to service but if sitting there watching the flames dance around while drinking your coffee is important to you, it will be much less than the 354, harman, etc. I do miss it fairly often but quick reloads is nice to. Its a give and take

If I were to let my 50-93 go with all those dancing blue's, my whole house would shortly be at around 100* just sayin. But then again, I went with coal for HEAT & economic issues.
