Welcome aboard Shaun. Someone with experience with these stoves will come along soon. You'll love the burn times with coal. I'm currently passing 48 hours since I last tended my hand fed furnace lol. Albeit a low slow burn. 48 hours is "unusual" to go between tendings, the norm is 12-18 hours depending on heat demand. Still pretty good over wood though :)

Thanks. I really think I will like coal just for the fact of longer burn time and way less work not getting wood cut split stacked seasoned and restacked in the garage. The wife keeps the wood stove going g when she needs to but I think coal would be easier for her

Lee, you forget to mention that your stove is a self created bastard child!! Don't know your house set up, but my HITZER 50-93 hopper fed heats 1800 sq with 1 (24 hrs) tending daily in this weird weather--tending every 12 hrs is tried & true once the cold gets here. For the record--my house is a 250 yr old broken up farmhouse--newer windows & insulated as well as ya can do a post & beam--stays at a consistent 72-74* no matter the outside temp--stove room around 80* with ceiling fan for distribution--good luck in your search S.---PS--life without the hopper, would SUK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Thanks I would really like to get a hopper fed stove only problem is I don't want to change my set up I have now. Would just like to unhook wood stove and hook up coal stove.my wood stove pipes out of the top and my chimney goes straight up no bends. Also I built my hearth pad and cannot change it. Next the install is a corner install and I don't want to move the stove farther out into the room. The stove is installed in my living room. I have a broken up single story house with a basement. I put a fan in the master bedroom pointed towards the living room and it moves the cold air towards the stove and it pulls the warm air to the back it works great.

S, the 50-93 can be idled down pretty much anywhere your comfortable--best to have more when ya need it then to be bitchin when ya don't. I also replaced a wood stove 10 yrs back--same set-up- "T" comin out the back & straight up---pix enclosed. :) Just suggestions my friend.

Fred, I was looking at the 50-93 and would like that option not sure if I would be able to fit the stove with my set up. Also with that what size coal can you burn in that with the hopper I would like to use pea and nut sizes depending on the seasons

If you don't want to move the HITZER forward due to back exhaust, simply start with a "T" at the back of 50-93. Go straight up, jog over the top of stove, and tie into your existing pipe going up. When you jog over the stove, don't forget to leave room for the decorative / sheet metal top to open. ..........and there ya go. A hopper fed stove......

life without a hopper would suck! yes I have to second that 100%!!! I burned wood for many years then wood pellets. I switched to coal last year. I bought a new Harman TLC2000 combination stove because it burned both wood and coal. I got it for the same reason you stated - straight up and out the top chimney pipe and plus it burned both wood and coal. The stove was awesome. It worked great 12-48 hour burn times with a full load of coal.Problem was - I couldn't keep it. Ill explain... They say average hand fed loading takes 20-30 minutes. Yea and sometimes longer - my average was 45 minutes. Compared to waking every couple hours to fill the stove with wood the coal was awesome. My issue is I do emergency service calls and when the phone rings I gotta go. drop what your doing and just leave, bye gone... I didn't have the time to deal with a time consuming reload. I sold it., and bought a used Hitzer. I got the 50-93 first and it appeared kinda big for my smaller 1200 sq ft house. So I bought a 30-95. I installed it in my house and it works awesome. 5 minute load times yea only 5 minutes. . shake, empty and load max 5 minutes.
So if you could wiggle and adjust for a rear vent stove I would recommend going with a hopper fed stove. Easy is easy and how easy it is, your wife might be happier when shes got to deal with the stove. So in general the stove adjustment would be well worth the effort.
The 254 and the 30-95 are similar stoves - same size unit, same doors and grates. only difference is chimney location and the hopper. you can look them up on the hitzer website

Thanks for the imputs I'll have to see if I can get a hopper fed stove to fit then I get what you guys are saying buy doing a t off the back. Iam guessing you guys with the hitzers really like them. My dad has a hitzer 608 and really likes it. I think since I have a Hitzer dealer around me I'll go with a hitzer. Now just to pick wich model.

I liked both, the 30-95, and 50-93. Great stoves.

Ya know somethin? You are right! It's not even close to being a stock Clayton or Hotblast anymore hahaha. It is it's own breed. It needs a name lol. "Ashley" is her name, yes, but it needs a brand name... How about, "The Lightning Mutant" or "Alien Anthracite Eater" or, "Frankencoalstine" or "Anthraleeviathan" Now that's got a ring to it, doesn't it lol

I don't think going with a Hitzer is ever a mistake.

Looks at that stove only problem is it requires a 7 inch chimney and I have a 6 inch
