Preferably dry wood. Open those side flappers for over fire air. Use a manual pipe damper and if you have a baro damper put tin foil over it. Let some ash build up in it and just poke a hole thru the grates for draft. Its basic wood burning rules that were used in old stove styles.

Start with some small fires to learn the ropes. Just use newspaper, maybe 4 or 5 full sheets with some small kindling on top and light it with the bottom door open, manual damper open, until it is burning good. Add some wood that is a little bigger and let that get burning, then bigger wood and let that get burning. Then you can close the bottom door and have the vents on the bottom door open a little, close the manual damper a little (dont over do that), open those side doors and you should be good until you let it go out by adding more wood.

A thermometer on the top side will be helpful as wood heats up the stove much quicker than coal does.

Dont be shocked if you have to redo the newspaper part a couple times to get it going. You dont need much air thru the bottom door but need a little after its burning well. You do want ash left on the grate to slow the burn a little and to protect the grate.

Dont use any accelerant to start it as it can explode. If you can find some videos online of people using pot belly stoves it would be very similar.

I’ve been burning for the past few wks, but not consistent yet. The temp outside has gotten to 62 or so and still have a fire but window-stats are open
