Hand Fed Coal Stove: Godin

So as some of you know the heat shield on my Godin came off at the end of last season. Over the summer I had someone come out and service my stove and reattach the heat shield. Well today is the first day I used the stove and found several issues.

-smoke is coming out of the new stove pipe they installed
- the heat shield they reattached wasn’t reattached tight enough so the minute the stove warmed up I can not open or close the heat shield which makes using the stove not really feasible.

So questions:

- should a new stove pipe “smoke” the first use to cure or something or is there a major issue

- does anyone know where I can get a pin that will actually hold the heat shield properly

Any help is appreciated.

Does it look like smoke coming out the seams, or steam rising off the pipe? Could be paint burning off. Make sure the CO detector is working.

For the shield would a bolt or something work? I’d just hit Lowe’s or tractor supply and go through the bins of random pins and bolts.

I can’t really tell if it is coming from a seam or off the pipe itself. The CO detector is very close by and is sitting at zero.

If it smells like paint burning its paint from the pipe and is normal with new pipe. If it smells like sulfur it is coal your smelling and that is bad, however CO has no smell. Anthracite doesnt make smoke but wood being used to light it will, or something blocking your pipe could too.

We are burning wood tonight, not coal. The smoke smells a little weird not totally like wood smoke but not just chemically.

How long can I operate the coal stove if I have to remove the heat shield again.

New stovepipe will give off a nasty smell for a bit.
