Lit the Harman on wood today, still need to reseal the Hitzer. Tomorrow high is 70, rest of the week high is under 60 with 30s and 40s at night. Will probably load up coal tonight.

You guys got some more fire pics? I love fire pics lol

Third day, third tending if ya count the first light. This particular shot was taken after clearing ash and before adding fresh coal.

Got pretty far along on the bin in the past 2 days. Just have to reseal the doors, check the chimney, and put a new rain cap on and I’m ready to burn. Little behind schedule.

I'm holding off until early Nov., due to a storm of problems and overdue projects. Put in mostly new pipe and a new baro. I need to replace another couple of rope seals. I am getting the itch to light up. I just took the AC's out of windows yesterday and was using them a few days ago. The sound of that oil fired water circulating around this 158 yr. old box is making me cringe.

After decades of using kindling or twigs and cardboard , I went with the matchlight starting last year. Either is easy but wood is free. Both of my grandmothers still cooked on coal ranges when I was quite young. As I recall, they both using corncobs soaked with "coal oil" to re light the stove. Happy dancing blues to all that are now "lit up".

Nice job, and only two days! That's the bin I have wanted to build for the past 10 years. Another winter with tarps, it seems. I can spin a few wrenches on an amatuer level, but wood usually starts running if it sees me coming.

I think I am going to fire the EFM up tomorrow. Going to try wood pellets for the first time to light the stoker.
Well, the wood pellets are an easy way to start the fire - but make sure you have some chimney draft first. For about 10 minutes I almost smoked myself out of the basement. Never had that happen before with charcoal.

Hank2. Gonna try corncobs for the next relight.

I use corncobs wired to a steel pipe to make a hand held caveman torch for burning out gypsies moth nests up in trees.

That would burn longer than kingsford.
Corncobs in my outhouse to wipe your butt.

FYI It takes 2250lbs of ear corn to get 2000lbs of sheld corn.

Fred, you need to start with the bigger end working to the narrow end. MUCH smoother that way.

Fred doesn't have a bigger end. If he gets any thinner he'll have to rent a shadow.

Rob, beware--charcoal may not have smoked you out of the basement, but without good draft it does put out CO--smokeless, odorless, and poisonous. I don't know any solution except to start the stove with windows open, and close them after the updraft is going strong in the flue. If the stove is sealed airtight and draws only outside air, no problem.

Corncobs...more uses than WD40 or vinegar!
