First out fire of the season for me... I didn't have my timer set for the warm temps and rain today. Oh well. Got it fired back up and running.

Last night I layered a blanket of fines over the top center of the fuel bed to get some really good heat output control. It was getting kinda warm in here yesterday (76-77 degrees) and I didn't wanna turn down the primary air any further. What's interesting is that it takes several burn cycles for it to really start running efficiently. I'm guessing it's because ash needs to seal up spaces where combustion air can get thru the fuel bed unused. These spaces would be between fire bricks and up along the front and rear liner facing the coal bed. The top of the fuel bed in this furnace is rectangular, you can see the blues running up along the sides between the blanket and the fire bricks where some of the stove size is somewhat exposed.
The house is right where it should be now 73-74 degrees and the thermostat is triggering heat calls to give the fire more combustion air occasionally. The drop down to 32 degrees OAT last night helped also lol.

We successfully reached first frost this morning. Next up, first snow. I hope that doesn't happen until November.

That's for sure Rob, it drives that cool, clammy and damp air out in a hurry!
It bottomed out right at 32 last night around here for several hours but didn't see any frost. Actually calling for a thin coat of snow this week. It will be very short lived with the ground still warm though.

I replaced the stovepipe inside the house yesterday. It felt solid but a lot of rusty looking flakes have come out of it in the spring when I bring it outside to clean it. I fired up the stoker, my draft was almost nonexistent and I couldn’t figure out why. I checked the usual suspects and fiddled with the manometer for a while but everything checked out. It was raining so I wasn’t going on the roof. The draft came right back where it should be when I put the clean out plug back in the bottom of the outdoor SS pipe. D'oh! Maybe I should have a startup/shutdown list pinned to the wall.

Temps dipped a bit here on the island. Sparked up this morning, just getting her ready for the night with a fresh load of coal. Here’s some eye candy...enjoy!!!
