Be sure to season the cast iron with a few small wood fires first.

2 wood fire cycles with 350 deg. on skillet. Was going to do couple more times and try coal. It's only new once so fingers are crossed. Stove temps will be on the low side for a while which should help.

That should be good, and you do not have to go to 500 on the skillet (as the manual says) before going to indirect mode, as long as the draft is good.

Preaching to the choir. Having read through a lot of posts regarding outside temps dictating coal burning finally got to see first hand last couple days when outside temp dropped to 20's. With outside temps in mid 30's stove would sit at 400, even went out once when warmed up overnight to 40's. Recent cold temps in lower 20's have it racing at 500 with air inlet almost shut, amazing. So 10-15 degrees ambient temp drop adds 100+ degrees stove temp, who'd a thunk.
