- Hand Fed Coal Stove: Harman Mark II
Have a Harman Mark II in the basement and just bought an older Hitzer 55 for a song, have a few questions.
How does the heat output compare between the two stoves? The Harman has a higher BTU rating, but I am looking for real world experience.
I am considering putting the Hitzer in the basement and moving the Harman up in to the living room as it's more aesthetically pleasing. The Harman will then burn primarily wood for ambiance and supplemental heat for the Hitzer.
I am basing all of this on the fact that I feel like the Hitzer will hold it's own against the Harman, however if they are not comparable stoves my plan is flawed.
I am getting the Hitzer either way, but want to make sure its gonna work for me or I will sell it and find something that will work.
Thanks in advance!

Fuel amount in and burnt equal heat out...55 can hold as much fuel as the MarkII., burn it right and it will make the heat.

The 55 free standing...
I'd put money on the Hitzer....
No fan, better air control and probably more coal held in the belly...

I think you have a good plan. The Hitzer has roughly the same grate size, but appears to have more surface area to transfer heat. I do not think you will be disappointed in the output.
Having stoves on both levels will give you a lot more capacity in cold weather.

Thanks Fred, gotta call for a shaker handle too, the one I bought is missing that one part.freetown fred wrote: ↑Sun. Aug. 05, 2018 6:50 amDitto on that C. It's got some character too as it appears someone was using the door for target practice and the "Hitzer" name plate has what looks like a 9mm piece of lead stuck in it!!
The Harman did a good job keeping the house warm, but we have 3 daughters and they like to be REALLY warm, and I'm always looking for an excuse to buy more tools/toys!!

I think I saw a pic of a 55 with a door like that for sale before, (minus the bullet marks) but possibly Im wrong. An early model. As long as its for coal your fine.

Couple more pics. I have seen some this "style" on google images.
It appears to have a direct and indirect modes controlled by the handle to the right of the "load door".
The ash door has to be opened to shake it down and each grate is shaken individually. The ash pan doesn't have a back to it which I may add if it doesn't restrict the removal of the ash pan.
The rear has a thermostat controlled air door with a chain that I'm sure is set incorrectly.
Fire box seems huge in comparison to the Harman with the half bricks in the front. Anyone know the reason for the "odd" shaped fire bricks with a step built into them?

on the Harman or Hitzer...
Harman is a filler to slide off the coal...
Early Hitzer might be a knock off of the RiteWay...

I heard somewhere it was a knockoff of the Riteway 37 maybe, not sure.CapeCoaler wrote: ↑Wed. Aug. 08, 2018 9:34 pmon the Harman or Hitzer...

There is one brick on the right side of the fire box looking in from the load door and one under the load door from the inside that I took the pic through the flue hole. They seem to be hollow, I can stick my hand inside up under the lip and they may be metal not brick, weird!
