Also check the condition of the front retaining bracket and bolt. I ordered a spare bracket because mine looks a little beat up.

I started heating the old 'cottage' before I had 3 kids...
With the Mark II...
Good stove, some minor annoyances...
Mostly the lack of full height fire brick in front...
Nice view...
But I needed a bigger stove...
Moved up to a DS Machine Basement #4...
That kept the 'cottage' warm...
Do a search on the Mark II and follow some of the advice given...
As always ask away when you get in a jam...

I wonder how that stove would react if you made your own full-front fire brick for it?

Might mess up the secondary air wash for the window. As is it will hold around 40 lbs. of coal if banked up right to the top of the firebricks in the back. For me that's good for a 12hr. burn even when I have it really cranking.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I have a quick question. Upon further inspection of the stove I noticed the glass has a small crack in it near corner. Will this crack effect burning coal in the stove?

Thanks,

Tim

Nope, it won't hurt a thing. You could put a little high temp silicone on it. That would seal it and keep it from falling out, if your worried about it.

As far as paint goes, I use Rust-O-Lleum Ultra High Heat.

Be sure to use the semi-gloss. A lot of people use the flat black but in my experience the flat black always turns grey-ish after you fire it up. The semi-gloss will stay black.

Good afternoon everyone,

Small update on the stove. I've given it a quick coat of high temp paint. Wife didn't want a gloss look so went with the flat. Still gotta do the doors. Also picked up 2 tons of nut. I'm ready for winter!

Thanks,

Just finished up the doors. It's amazing how much better the stove will look with a little paint!

Looks great and you won't believe the heat a Mark II will put out. Mine keeps the house at 74 even in sub zero weather and the stove is in the basement.

PM me if you need any tips or advice on the stove this winter.

Happy Labor Day everyone!

Finally moved the stove into place on the hearth! Also installed new firebrick and am amazed how much bigger the firebox is compared to the Surdiac I was using. I think it looks great! Can't wait til 1st fire up!

Tim
