- Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Fire chief 450
Hey guys so before my next stove purchase I figured I would consult you guys this time.
I currently have the fire chief 450, which is still working just fine burning wood and bit coal. But we plan on converting our attached garage into another room. This room will not be hooked up to the current duct work, and will have a stand alone ac and heat unit separate from the rest of the house. I plan on insulating well but it will probably be tile on the concrete slab to help keep it cool in the summer.
So here is my list of wants for this next stove.
1. Burns anthracite
2. Direct vent
3. Burn times up to 36 hours if I idle it down. The only reason for this is I work 24 hour shift and would like to have a fire when I come home and not have to start it back up.
4. Not overly large. This will go in the corner of this room and would like it to look nice but not take up a ton of space.
The upstairs with this addition will be around 2000 sq feet but I really don’t need it to heat the entire thing. Mainly the 500 sq feet it’s in and some trickle over into the adjoining rooms would be nice. Also if I could keep it on somewhat of a budget that would be great.

Hand fired (or hand fed) stoves can not be direct vented. Only mechanical stoker stoves (driven by electric motors) can be direct vented. Stokers should be able to run for a couple days on a full hopper for the condition of the coldest few days of the winter. And well beyond that for warmer days.

What's the budget before models outside that number get brought up?

didn’t realize they got that pricey. What are some of the entry level ones I should be looking at?oliver power wrote: ↑Mon. Jul. 09, 2018 6:07 amIf you're talking new, that's a hand fired budget. .......and a little on the low side at that. Double it for stoker budget.

If I take the direct vent requirement out, and go with a hand fired. What would some good options be. I’ve mainly been looking at the chubby line of stoves. What kind of burn times can you expect with something like that?

Using your consistent 24+ hour unattended burn time will eliminate near all hand feds, I'm afraid.
Finding a used stoker fed w/ it's hopper reserve would not disappoint, and could meet your budget.
And remember, price only hurts for a short time as saved fuel costs and convenience are returned soon enough.

For heatin your 500 sq with some over flow--check out the HITZER line--free standing-- with hopper--50-93--I heat 1800 sq. with 12 hr tending but have gone 24--36 hr tending when needed--depends a lot on how tight your house is. there are other hopper hand fired that would work just as well.

What are average hand fed tending times? Also looking at some post it seems some can get away with just adding more coal around the 12-14 hour mark without doing anything else. How true is that with the chubby?McGiever wrote: ↑Mon. Jul. 09, 2018 9:37 amUsing your consistent 24+ hour unattended burn time will eliminate near all hand feds, I'm afraid.

You had stated from the beginning that this needed to go 24 hour unattended...Are you looking for an exception or the rule?
"Bragging Rights" aside, 12 hour for any hand fed.
Left any more than 12 hour the output is diminished, especially if left untouched.

Sure if that’s how you want toMcGiever wrote: ↑Mon. Jul. 09, 2018 9:56 pmYou had stated from the beginning that this needed to go 24 hour unattended...Are you looking for an exception or the rule?

Put it. Obviously if I was looking at around $1500 a 3k stove is out of the budget. So my wife will have to learn how to operate the stove when we get it. Her work hours are long also during the winter and two days a week it will have to go unattended for 12-13 hours. I’d obviously like it to go
Longer but if it doesn’t fit in the budget then we will have to adapt.

M, are you missing the approx. 500sq. needing to be heated? Nothin to do with bragging rights. Seems the man is looking for economy & efficiency.
