Hand Fed Coal Stove: Heitzer 503
Other Heating: Oil

Wondering if i can clean my Heitzer 503 chimney liner myself. I’ve not had it done yet and have run probably 10 tons of coal and 3 cords of wood through It over 4 seasons. I know i should probably be cleaning at least yearly.

What would i need to do this. I was talking to someone and they said you clean them from the firebox upward. This sounded counter intuitive as you think you’d want gravity working with you.

I think i have a elbow on the back of the stove but can’t remember. Any suggestions? Thanks. Bob

With the stove in place I don't think it possible to clean from below.

I don't think you have an elbow. Hopefully the liner is smooth wall.

Not trying to be a smart aleck, BUT, if you need to ask, calling in a chimney sweep might not be a bad idea......... Watch what he does. Ask what he's looking at.

Basically, you're looking for any build-up, corrosion, holes, or damage of any kind. Pay close attention to the top 18 inches. If in sections, make sure they are still locked together.

from the top...
the round liner gets squeezed thru the throat in the fireplace...
the brush won't pass thru...
Camera down the pipe for inspection...

More of a bump on this topic with the season approaching. I just ran the brush down my 8in flex liner about 25ft +~-. Taped some string to the work apple phone and video recorded the descent. My expectation was it’s shot, 5 years of coal burning, 4 years of just sitting isn’t friendly to stainless liners. But holy cow, minus some light yellowing/browning it looks almost bran spanking new. The bottom isn’t the nicest to some trimming will take place soon but I’m in complete awe. Even dropping some string with a pipe wrench on the end isn’t a bad idea, never know what bird nested or bee colony made a home. Stay safe

Good you checked, and good news on the liner.
