Hand Fed Coal Stove: Harman TLC 2000

Post by filix » Fri. Apr. 06, 2018 9:07 am

Hello forum. The stove came with the house when I bought it. The original owner told me he burnt coal in it, and it heated the whole house. But there is no Grate, or other parts to help me burn coal. I have been burning wood in it for 8 years works great. I would like to burn coal also. If I could. There is a part that comes out right in the front. I flipped it over and the is a date 10/19/84. also the letter B and the number 4023. hope this helps. filix.

The three models I know of are:

First there was a wood only model that had only a flat bed and no ash pan. The a coal burning kit became available that included a rocking grate and a hopper to feed coal and a shallow ash pan.

Next was a multi fuel that had grate bars that extended front to back and the shallow ash pan. No hopper.

Third was the last model 2310 that added an addition between the legs to hold a deeper swing out ash pan. This also has front to back grate bars, but unlike the previous model they are deeper in the center for higher coal capacity. Again, no hopper.

Yours sounds like the original model without any grate or ash pan. The original owner might have had the coal kit if he burned coal in it.

If yours is the multi fuel you should have an ash pan just below the grate. Only the two front doors to access the ash pan. No door between the legs.

Going by francob's description, I had the multi fuel vigilant. Not a very good coal stove. I bought mine used, and did order the optional (at the time) hopper. The hopper made quite the positive difference.

I will say this; If you cut your teeth on the pre-2310 Vigilant stove, you'll be able to run any coal stove afterwards. Jumping into a HITZER, you'd feel like you were on vacation, and be able to run the stove blind folded.

An ash pan that comes out? Below the grate bars it just seems like the floor of the stove.

With doors open, does it look like there is room for an ash pan under the grates. KUDO's on the pix. :)

After watching MA's tear down of his VIG, all I can say is I'm glad I've got my HITZER. But like OP said, ya get this one figured out, you'll be able to run any hand fired. :)
