Hand Fed Coal Stove: Harman TLC 2000

Should I fill in between those grate bars with sand. Does the grate that I'm missing go in those holes in the back? Do I need to keep the doors open just a crack for ventilation?

It looks like you have no grate and have the original design Vigilant for wood burning. You will need the coal burning conversion kit to burn coal. They do come up from time to time on Ebay and craigslist.

Probably best to consider another stove for coal burning.

If I try a few pieces of coal, should I fill in between the grate bars with some kind of sand? How about keeping one of the doors open just a crack for extra air?

Its going too much to look. Got to wait for it to cool down. Do I need firebrick too burn coal. Doesn't look like there was ever any in there. Thanks for all the help.
Hi Filix, If you have a coal kit, or know where you can get one cheap ($50.00 - $60.00), and want to play, By all means, go for it. If you'd like my opinion; I wouldn't waste my money trying to burn coal in that stove. If you're lucky, you may get an 8 hour burn. The tending is also a pain in the butt. Lots of shaking the reciprocating grates. Then slicing from down below the grates. It will get old real quick. If you're serious about burning coal to heat your house, get your self a real coal stove.

You can sprinkle some nut coal on a wood fire and it will burn and extend the burn time, but you have no way to get rid of the ash, and starting a fresh fire all the time is a lot of trouble.

Just on top of the grate bars there is a slot about a 1/4 inch wide that runs around the parameter. For maybe a ash pan or a another grate?

F, it strikes me you're trying to turn a frog into a prince--works well in fairy tales, but real life--not so much. I agree with the suggestions on tracking down an actual COAL stove. Hell, ya got all summer.

Hi filix, based on the "1977" embossed date on your stove, what you have is a wood stove. Those bars you speak of are not grate bars but simply the ash pit area for wood. As others have said, get yourself a coal stove.
Best of luck.

Sorry it couldn't of been more positive F. But again, ya got time. I'm sure you've said, but if you fill out your profile as to where you're from, we can all keep an eye out for any used stoves in your area. I promise, nobody's gonna steal ya!! LOL

Here's a coal kit with rocker grates on e-bay. You can buy a decent coal stove for the money they are asking. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vermont-Castings-Vigilan ... SwUUdawlDP

Yup, what Oliver said x 2. If it were me, I'd put the 500 toward a Vigilant II 2310.
