Newest chubby update

Hello my chubby family, it’s been a long while since I’ve been on here! Happy Easter... I just wanted to give my latest update on the chubby I bought new from Larry of course back in November. Well, I believe I have great control of this stove, and as people have said, you can predict what this thing will do. My longest burn I have achieved with this chubby (which was just not too long ago) was 37 hrs and still recovered the fire by just opening up the air supply. I was totally amazed at the chubby stove, but I really had some ash to remove from that burn lol. Past couple of wks the outdoor temps have been anywhere from 25*-65* for the highs but anything above 45* out, I set the air underneath open just a sliver which gives me a temp of about 300* and I just tend the stove once a day and the house stays around 75*(which is where the wife likes it). I bought 2 ton of nut coal (from TSC), which I will never do again, but anyways I’m down to my last maybe 8 bags or so which will get me right to 5 months of burning coal. But I will be making a trip to buy some Santa coal and some Lehigh too(maybe 5-7 bags each) so I can compare a little before I’m done burning for the yr!I am so pleased with this stove and with all of you for the info I needed when I was getting started with this coal journey. So sorry this was long winded but have been wanting to do this for a while and just sat down to do this. I do recommend burning coal to people and trying to get my parents to switch to “the dark side” lol. Thx again everyone

I'm glad you had a good season. I have been burning Lehigh for 2 seasons now, good coal. I am a couple of weeks away from shutdown, cleaning and rest prevention for the warm humid summer. On that note , we had snow this morning!

Thank you all! That TSC garbage is horrible. I’ve had to screen every bag to get that crap out, the coal itself burns just fine. Cant wait to see a bag of clean coal lol. We also had 3” of snow ourselves this morning, what the heck is up with Mother Nature. Supposed to be 72* tomorrow now....wow! I’m hoping we are just a couple wks away from shutting down too, been a good learning season with coal and I really enjoy it so far, now if I could just get the wife to stop starring at me with the “I’m gonna choke you” look when I shake the stove down I’ll be alright lol.

Thats great WS. I have not been able to get the heat through out my house yet. How big is your home? Is it an open floor plan?

Vonda, my house is 1,800sqft 2 story wth an open floor plan. It is an easy task for the chubby to heat but, I do not use it or push it to heat the upstairs! I have a separate system for upstairs and it’s just as easy to use it. So I’m basically just heating 900 sqft and the house is well insulated. When we burned wood, I did use the stove to heat the upstairs after finding out the air direction in my house and worked well, but that was before we put a hvac system upstairs. Everyone likes to sleep with the bedroom doors shut and it gets a bit chilly by morning if we use the stove heat for upstairs lol.

Do you mind telling how you found out the direction of the air in your home. I already have an HVAC system.
Thanks.
Here in Atlanta it going down to 39° tomorrow. It is 74° now

V, try a candle or incense in different hallways--OR----I'm sure there is a way more technical/complicated way to do it! .>)

Candle and incense work but need to make sure you shut down any fans or HVAC running and just go with the heat naturally moving through the house. I'm picking up just under half a ton of Lehigh nut tomorrow. Locally, not driving out to the mine for a couple hundred pounds of coal. Planning to run to May with once a day tending's just to keep the chill off. I'm looking at a bigger stove for next year but the Chubby has done us well this season, just not big enough for our old, less than ideal insulated 1860's stone house. Good luck with the early spring all, things are looking like their on the way up down here in PA. Keep warm all soon we'll be saying keep cool!

I honestly didn’t “find” the air movement, I just had a little 6” desktop fan that I sat on a shelf next to the stove that was pointed back to the kitchen to “move” some heat into there. The fan worked, but then realize the upstairs started to get warmer ( this was before I removed walls downstairs to open the floor plan). So that is all I had done, but as others have said candles, incense, toilet paper taped to ceiling. That will tell you the air movement in your house.

Hi Wood slave.. That's a perfect ID for those of us know first hand the experience of heating with wood.

Your story is a familiar one. I've had a number of stoves over the years and the Cubby is by far the best. We had a cool spring and early summer here in northern Maine. Nights in May and June went into the 30's. F on many occasions.... not cold enough to keep a coal fire going but just right for a wood fuel fire. With the Chubby input vent set just slightly open I was getting 6-8 hour wood fire burns with no trouble. My hat goes off to whoever designed this stove. And it's been nothing less than a pleasure doing business with Larry Trainor.

Up here we have Blaschack and TS with TS coming in about $.50 cheaper per bag. Haven't had too much trouble with TS coal but with the limited supply options, there isn't much to do about it.

Wish you and yours a warm comfortable home during the heating season.

Regards.
