Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Hitzer 55
Coal Size/Type: Blaschak Chestnut

Hello All , My new Hitzer 55 is up and running. I got it from Bantly's Hardware in Johnstown a little over a month ago , Installed it and ran all new ductwork. It has been running now for over two weeks. It took me a couple of days to find it's sweet spot. Now it runs great. I use less coal than I did in my Harman and the house stays warmer. We still have snow on the ground here in Western Pa. and it has been pretty cold at night. I am very pleased with this furnace and I thank everybody here on this forum whose advice helped me along the way. Attached are some photos of my setup.

Nice! Are you closing the inside slide door via the lever or leaving that open all the time?

After I top off the Coal and it starts to catch real good with the Blue Dancin flames, I then close the Damper Lever. If I close it too soon, a gas build up happens and there have been small kabooms { Puffbacks}.

Im glad your able to close it as you gain some efficiency, at least in my view. Some people have troubles and dont close it.

What made you decide to go with the 55 model? I remember when you asked for everyone's opinion on the 55 vs. the 82, and I think I was the only one that voted for the 55. I know my opinion doesn't count that much, so you must have had another reason. :D

I am using the blower that came with it from the factory. It is a 465 cfm type. Not too big or loud, just designed to move hot air.

I chose the 55 due to the size of my house. It isn't very big. After hearing conflicting ideas on what I should do, I decided to call Hitzer directly. They kinda said that the 55 is more than ample for my house and they recommended that it was better to run the 55 at regular capacity than backing down the 82 and running it slower so to speak. I can say that the 55 is more than enough for my house. If I went with the 82 , I would have a perpetual sauna.
